We undergo ritual cleansing, attend a special O-Harai (blessing) held for our members, then train in the courtyard of the shrine. It’s an amazing experience.

Tucked into a back street in the Asato/Makishi area, the Higaonna Dojo is a time machine as far as karate training is concerned. It’s tiny, tough, conservative, and not for the feint of heart. The heat and humidity level in the dojo during training is extreme, and the training can only described as “vigorous.”

In the City of Chatan, around 30 minutes north Naha, you will find the Seibukan dojo close to Hwy. 58 and Jagaru Road. This is the dojo of Zenpo Sensei, the son of Zenryo Shimabukuro Sensei, a student of the legendary Chotoku Kyan. It’s a beautiful dojo that offers first class training in a positive and friendly environment.

This dojo was established a few years after the death of Chojun Miyagi Sensei in 1953. The students from Miyagi’s Sensei old dojo set up a a flimsy temporary structure (kabaya) which later became the Jundokan before the current modern building was erected on the adjoining lot in the Asato district of Naha, close to Kokusai Dori.

Originally the dojo of the legendary Yuchoku Higa, the Kyudokan is located in the labyrinth of tiny lanes that make up the Tsuboya district of Naha City. A private (juku-closed) dojo presided over today by the nephew of the founder, Minoru Higa, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious dojo in Okinawa.
